Help! I Need Somebody! Help – Not Just Anybody

(Tune from Huey Lewis and the News’ “I Want A New Drug”)

I want a new site
One that won’t make me kick
My laptop into a wall
Or make me feel like a non-tech chick

I want a new site
One that won’t hurt my pride
One that won’t make my biz too dry
Or make me wanna run and hide

One that won’t make me nervous
Wonderin’ what to do
One that makes me feel like I feel like I know just what to do…
One that makes the clients queue…

I want a new site
One that will thrill
One that don’t cost too much
One that’s not swill.

I need the help of http://girlsguidetowebdesign.com

I’m the captain of my own business ship (writing & editorial services); I give the orders here, and I am Superwoman with words. However, I am entirely self-taught when it comes to web design. I created my business site in July 2011 using WordPress.org, and I have my own URL…but I’m no expert. I feel like I’m flailing, dog-paddling through the sea of plug-ins and coding. Sure, I can keep my head above water (mostly) but it takes me a lot of inelegant thrashing and gasping to make it to the other side of the shallow end. Not on.

The problem with thrashing around ineptly in the sea of web design is that you know you want something better, but you may not even know the words for exactly WHAT “better” is. I know I want a site that reflects more of my personality – that looks cooler, has a more intuitive design, that reflects me.

Mediocre design does not trust in clients inspire.

I would like to automate more things and provide better, cooler, easier ways for my clients to examine my work and contact me. I’d like to add video, better fonts, a scrolling header for promos and news. I’d also like to figure out how to put portfolio samples on my site in an elegant fashion, not just slapdash, puerile-looking PDF links. Right now, my site is like a goat hitched to a wagon; it gets me places, sure, but I’d like really prefer a car. Not a Ferrari, but maybe a nice, easy-riding Camry.

For me, the First-Class edition of the course would be best. I do better with a set schedule of classes and assignments (Virgo ex-teacher and professor here) and I like the interaction with other students and the instructor mentioned.

One fun secret fact about me? If I tell, it won’t be a se….Oh, fine. Even though this will go on my professional site (personal humiliation garners points, one hopes): I accidentally stabbed myself in the butt once. With a paring knife.

Please, help me from inadvertently doing the same with my site.

Readers: please help me win votes to win this awesome course that I’ve been ogling in frustrated, penurious lust by liking my post here (nowhere else!) http://bit.ly/girlsguidecontest.

Thanks!
